A NEW INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATED LABORATORY FOR THE « ENDOSYMBIOTIC INFECTION AND NODULE DEVELOPMENT » LIPM TEAM

Andreas Niebel just obtained an International Associated Laboratory for the NOCOSYM project he built with French and Argentinean researchers. The LIAs combine one or more CNRS laboratories and one or more laboratories of another country for 4 years (renewable once) around a jointly defined project, forming a « laboratory without walls ». With the LIA between EDB and the Gulbenkian Institute of Science, this second LIA of TULIP labs shows the international ambition of our LabEx units.
This NOCOSYM project - for “long NOn COding RNAs in SYMbiotic nodule development" - offers a multidisciplinary approach from 4 laboratories, two of them located in La Plata and Santa Fe in Argentina and two of them in France (Orsay and Toulouse). The project leader is Maria-Eugenia Zanetti (CONICET researcher at the University of La Plata) on the Argentinian side, and Andreas Niebel (CNRS researcher at the LIPM) for the French side. Also involved in this project are the groups of Martin Crespi (CNRS researcher, IPS2 Orsay) and Federico Ariel (CONICET researcher in Santa Fe).

The 4 groups have complementary expertise and skills to identify and characterize the role of non-coding long RNAs during the development of the symbiotic nodule in the model legume Medicago truncatula. LIA carriers plan to first focus on a key transcription factor of nodular development "MtNF-YA1", before extending the project to more general genome-wide approaches.

The four laboratories involved in this project have common research skills and areas of interest, as well as additional expertise and knowledge that gives LIA cooperation a high added value. Note that the collaboration between Andreas Niebel and Federico Ariel began in 2009 on the characterization of the binding of NF-Y to DNA. Federico Ariel has made many trips to Toulouse to finish this project, including a recent Visiting Scientists grant from LabEx TULIP in December 2016.
